Young triathlon prospects take part in British assessments

Ollie Hayward on the run leg in Super Series British Triathlon Assessments

Four of Bermuda’s brightest prospects took part in the 2026 Super Series British Triathlon Assessments last weekend.

Ollie Hayward, Rory Shepherd, Rohan Roopra and Dominic Wright took part in a 400-metre swim on Saturday at the University of Nottingham and a 10km bike leg transitioning to a 3km run at Kendrew Barracks on Sunday.

Athletes with aspirations to race in the British Triathlon Youth & Junior Super Series are mandated to attend, with the results from the weekend setting the order of entry for the initial races.

The oldest of the competitors, Hayward took part in the junior open division, finishing 24th of 78 in the swim in a time 4min 32.9sec. He followed that by finishing 34th in the bike and run in 26:54.10.

After his efforts, Hayward gave his thoughts on the performance and level of competition.

“The British Performance Assessments are very different from the usual format of triathlon racing,” Hayward said.

“The weekend started with a 400m pool time trial, where I was really happy to come away with a PB despite the pressure of the occasion. That set me up well for the bike-run on the following day, which was seeded from the swim times.

“Heading into Sunday, I was sitting 24th out of 75 and felt in a strong position thanks to my swim. Unfortunately, I got a little lost in transition, which cost me the advantage I had given myself, and the run is still an area I know needs more work.

“Even so, I was pleased to get stuck into the racing and now the focus shifts to finishing exams before a big summer of training. It was also brilliant to see so many familiar faces on the course, from fellow Bermuda athletes to other Caribbean competitors.”

Wright produced a fantastic swim to finish fifth of the 105 entrants in the Youth Open division before finishing 68th in the bike and run.

In the same category, Shepherd finished 31st in the swim and 24th in the bike and run, while Roopra was 81st in the swim and 48th in the bike and run.
