The second annual Eldon Raynor Memorial Golf Tournament will take centre stage at Belmont Hills Golf Course on Saturday.

The captain’s choice tournament will see foursomes battle for cash and various other prizes while honouring the legacy of the Cup Match and Southampton Rangers legend.

Organiser Eldon Raynor Jr is looking forward to a fun-filled and exciting event.

“We are looking forward to everyone having a good time and enjoying the day,” he told The Royal Gazette. “We just want to encourage people to play the game, enjoy life and have fun because life is short.

“We are looking for everyone getting to know new people, putting their best foot forward, having a great competition and also doing better than they did yesterday — which is one thing my dad always emphasised.”

Trophies will be awarded to the three top teams with awards for longest drive and closest to the pin bring cash prizes to male and female players. Food and soft drinks will also be provided.

Raynor is encouraged by the amount of teams that have already registered for the event.

“We have 18 teams so far and if others show up then the more the merrier,” he said.

The veteran musician is also grateful for the support he has received from fellow organisers.

“A huge thanks goes out to Merkel Smith, who has done outstanding work helping me to get this off the ground and organise it,” he said.

“It’s just been him and I and he’s really been guiding me and doing the ground work in the trenches for me along with my wife and mother.”

Action gets under way at the Warwick golf course with a 7.30am shotgun start.

Late Cup Match legend Raynor, who played a crucial role in establishing Southampton Rangers as a dominant force on the local cricket and football scene, passed away nearly four years ago at the age of 89.

He represented St George’s in Cup Match between 1958 and 1979, amassing 738 runs at an average of 29.52 with a highest score of 79 not out, and claimed 33 wickets at an average of 25.15 with his off spin.

A solid middle-order batter, Raynor earned a reputation for pulling his team out of trouble and is fondly remembered by his team-mates as being at his best in adversity.

As well as cricket and football, he also held his own on the golf course and hosted an 18-hole birthday mini-golf tournament at his Southampton residence.

After his playing career ended, Raynor became a notable philanthropist and helped provide funds for young people in Bermuda to pursue their sporting career.
