Drug smuggler handed two-year jail term

An American who imported more than a kilogram of cannabis into the island has been jailed for two years.

Silamon Safi admitted the offence, as well as having the controlled drug with intent to supply and possessing oxycodone, during earlier court appearances and was sentenced for the offences yesterday.

The 26-year-old from California committed the offences on April 18. Prosecutors decided not to pursue a charge that he imported Oxycodone on the same date.

The case was originally sent to the Supreme Court but returned to the lower court in June.

The Crown told The Royal Gazette that Safi imported 1,336.2 grams of cannabis, worth $133,620 on Bermuda’s streets if sold by the gram.

Safi, who has been in custody since April, apologised for his actions before being sentenced and told the court that he had learnt from his mistakes and felt bad about leaving his parents back in the US.

Magistrate Craig Attridge sentenced Safi to two years behind bars each for importing and having the cannabis and three months for possessing the oxycodone, with all sentences to run concurrently and ordered that time already in custody be considered.

Mr Attridge also fined Safi $300 for having the oxycodone, which he ordered be taken from cash he had when he arrived in Bermuda.
