Carer on toddler manslaughter charges

A day care attendant has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the September 9 death of toddler Nasir Burgess.

Jennifer Franks, 56, of Hill Crescent, Pembroke, sat without speaking in the dock at Magistrates’ Court. The charge is indictable only, meaning she was not required to enter a plea.

Represented by lawyer Saul Froomkin, Ms Franks was released on $50,000 bail.

According to Crown counsel Tawana Tannock, the infant had been left at the day care facility, which was not identified in court, while Ms Franks completed an errand. Upon her return the child was taken to the hospital.

No further details were given in Magistrates’ Court but, according to Mr Froomkin, his client is a Bermudian who has been a carer for 20 years.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo ordered Ms Franks to surrender her travel documents and said she could only leave the jurisdiction with the permission of the court. She was ordered to return on April 26.
