Athlete charged with GBH through impaired driving

Top distance runner and anticonscription activist Lamont Marshall has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm to a couple through impaired driving.Mr Marshall is alleged to have seriously hurt motorcycle rider Ian Scotton, 25, from Warwick and his pillion passenger Carly Lima, 22, from Sandys.According to police, the collision took place at 1.09am on Monday, August 13, at the junction of Middle Road and South Road in Paget.A police spokesman said a man in a car was travelling east on South Road, when it collided with the cycle travelling in the opposite direction.Mr Marshall is alleged to be the car driver.In addition to charges of causing GBH to the two victims while impaired by drugs or alcohol, he is also accused of refusing to give a breath sample to police.Mr Marshall, 28, of Devonshire, was not required to enter pleas to the charges as the matter must be dealt with by the Supreme Court.He has been in custody since his arrest but prosecutor Cindy Clarke did not oppose bail. Defence lawyer Eugene Johnston explained Mr Marshall is a top distance runner who attends overseas running events.Mr Marshall is also well known as a member of the anticonscription campaign group Bermudians Against the Draft.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner granted him $10,000 bail with one surety and told him he must not leave the Country without permission. He must return to court on August 29.Ms Lima was treated for what police described as serious head injuries in the Intensive Care Unit of King Edward VII Memorial before being transferred overseas for further treatment.Mr Scotton has been discharged from hospital.
