Prolific offender jailed over car crash

A prolific offender has been jailed and fined $1650 after he commited a slew of traffic offences.Angelo Matthews, 22, of Crossland Lane, appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with dangerous driving after he was arrested for driving into a car. He also pleaded guilty to driving without insurance, driving without a licence, and driving an unlicensed bike.He was remanded into custody by Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner, who noted that he had a series of unpaid fines for traffic offences, and traffic charges dating back to last year.“You have a history of allegedly committing the same offences over and over, and not coming to court,” Mr Warner told him as he remanded him into custody, and ordered him to stand trial tomorrow.According to Crown counsel, Larissa Burgess, a police car stationed on Marsh Lane, Pembroke at 8.30pm on March 29, followed Matthews’ motorcycle after he turned from Union Street onto North Street without paying attention to a stop sign.Officers turned on their siren as the bike headed for Angle Street. The court heard that Matthews looked over his shoulder at police and accelerated onto Angle Street.He struck the side of a car in front of him after trying to pass on the inside.Matthews struck a wall and fled east, but was pursued by police and arrested.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him $500 for dangerous driving, $300 for leaving the scene of a collision and $500 for diving with no insurance. Matthews was also banned from the roads for two years, and fined $250 for driving an unlicensed bike — as well as $100 for driving with no licence.
