Teenagers admit stealing bike and $5,500 of contents

Two students yesterday admitted stealing a bike containing more than $5,000 worth of jewellery and other goods.Jamie Cann Jr, of Warwick, and Ru-Jzarr Simmons, of Devonshire, told Magistrates’ Court they took Katarina Rocha-Bulhoes’s motorcycle as well as the jewellery, rain gear, camera, BlackBerry phone and pet food that was inside on January 16.The 18-year-olds also admitted handling stolen goods between January 16 and 25.Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Cindy Clarke said Ms Rocha-Bulhoes and her boyfriend saw Cann and Simmons park alongside her bike at City Hall car park in Hamilton.The pair started walking toward Washington Mall and then Ms Rocha-Bulhoes realised she’d left her keys behind. She ran back and discovered her bike was gone.The motorcycle was valued at $3,000, and the various items at $5,526.Ms Rocha-Bulhoes spotted Cann and Simmons driving her bike on Front Street 20 minutes later. She stopped them but the two laughed and drove off.Two days later, police informed her the vehicle had been found in trees on Cedar Heights Lane, by what turned out to be Cann’s home.Cann denied taking the vehicle, but on January 23 some of the complainant’s jewellery was found at Reid Street’s Cash for Gold store. Cann was on record as selling it on January 17.That same day, Simmons was arrested for taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent. Police searched his bedroom and found the bike key, plus the complainant’s camera. Cann denied involvement when arrested, but items including the complainant’s jacket and some jewellery were found in his room.Simmons had also made calls with her cell phone.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner ordered social inquiry reports for each teenager and adjourned the matter until May 22. He released them each on $2,000 bail, plus one surety.
