Man admits stealing motorcycle, alcohol

A Hamilton Parish man this morning admitted stealing a woman’s motorcycle in front of her along with a series of other offences.

Jamaka Gibbons, 40, pleaded guilty to taking a vehicle without consent during an incident on May 17 and stealing two bottles of alcohol from Paradise Lounge in a separate incident on the same day.

The court heard that at around 7pm a resident staying on the Paradise Lounge property heard a male speaking loudly on a phone near the swimming pool. While she saw him through her window, when she stepped outside he had gone.

She then heard the sound of glass breaking near the poolside bar. She went to the area, tripping over a tyre-changing tool, at which point she heard more glass breaking.

While she did not spot the man she had seen previously, she noticed a “conspicuous” green vehicle speed past her.

It was later discovered that two bottles of alcohol, valued at a total of $75.35, had been taken from the bar and another three bottles had been destroyed.

Later that evening, the court heard Gibbons confronted a woman who was leaving work as she attempted to get on her motorcycle, which was parked near the flagpole on Front Street.

Gibbons began asking her for money, but when she refused, he reportedly became aggressive, causing her to scream and drop the keys to her motorcycle.

Gibbons then picked up the keys and rode away on her bike at high speed without a helmet.

When Gibbons was later arrested for other incidents and his home was searched, he showed officers where they could find the keys for the motorcycle.

Interviewed by police, he admitted stealing the alcohol from Paradise Lounge and dropping several bottles in the process. He also admitted stealing the motorcycle, explaining that he did so because he was on drugs at the time.

Gibbons also admitted another offence — stealing $14 of toothpaste from the Hamilton MarketPlace in an incident on April 16.

Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe released Gibbons on $1,000 bail with a like surety, referring the matter to drug treatment court.
