West End to unite one week on from double murder
The devastated owners of a quiet bar where two people were shot dead by gunmen last week have planned a vigil to pay their respects.
The gathering will be held tomorrow night outside Legends sports bar in Somerset, with the community asked to turn out with candles, flowers and mementos to “pay tribute, offer support and work towards a brighter, safer future for all”.
A friend of owners Kenny and Carmelita Simmons said the couple were badly shaken but coming to terms with the tragedy. Mr Simmons witnessed the attack at about 10.30pm last Thursday.
The gunmen injured three people and killed Jasmine Smith, 32, and Shaquan Williams, 29, who were named by police on Monday.
The spokesman said: “They have been having their ups and downs. At their better moments, they are just trying to be rational about it and stay positive.”
He described Legends as a small West End hangout, where people from around the community came to relax.
“It’s a place for folks to just come and hang out. Kenny, who is a big basketball fan, will often go and talk about sports with people.
“It’s just a small neighbourhood bar where folks were relaxing, where a number of people like to go on a regular basis. This has been a very sad disruption of what would have been a fun, normal time for winding down.”
He said the couple hoped to restore the establishment. “They are planning to reopen at some point. They just want to wait first and let this whole thing settle,” he added.
For now, the gathering was about “paying respects — folks will be able to come and listen to what’s said, share a few words and bring a candle along”.
The gathering at Somerset Road, themed “End the cycle, stop gun violence” is to run from 7pm to 8.30pm, with parking at Warren Simmons field.
Mrs Simmons told The Royal Gazette: “This is not about us or our business — it’s about helping a community to heal.”
A poster for the vigil said people were invited to “a community candlelight vigil honouring victims and families affected by gun violence in Somerset”.
“We come together to mourn the recent tragedy that has shaken our beloved community.”
It added: “Together, we mourn, remember and rebuild — your presence matters.
“Together, we can bring hope, healing and unity to our community.”
Police on Tuesday said a 23-year-old male suspect had been arrested at the weekend in connection with the attack, while three others were described as “in hiding”.
A group of four people with their faces disguised by crash helmets were caught on footage released by police a day after the incident, in which shots were fired “indiscriminately” at patrons.
Police believe one suspect was injured at the scene, potentially by gunfire.
Officers are keen to talk to anyone in the western area on the night of the shooting who saw two men on two separate bikes on Somerset Road.
Witnesses can contact the BPS on 295-0011, the serious crime unit on 247-1739, call 911 in urgent scenarios, or use the anonymous and independent Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.
