Work skills training, and grappling with the impact of the recession, were at the fore in the latest Bermuda College annual report.College President Duranda Greene said the 2011/12 academic year saw a rise in partnerships with Government and businesses for vocational training. The College also opened a local Cisco Academy, which took on its first students last summer.Meanwhile, faculty and staff agreed to a six-day furlough and pay freeze, in order to spare jobs after the College’s Government funding was cut.The Bermuda College Foundation has been re-established, with a registered charity to support its fundraising.According to Board of Governors Chairman Walton Brown, the College also moved into the four- to seven-year steps of its ten-year Strategic Plan, launched in 2008.Support for student residence — one of the Plan’s long term objectives — remains high, according to a survey of students, in which 79 percent said the College should offer student housing, and 53 percent said they would use it.The College began to develop a plan for students with physical and learning disabilities in Fall, 2011. Roughly 20 students were supported in the past academic year. And the cafeteria boycott by the Student Government Council saw a fixed-price student menu offered, with ten percent discounts for students presenting College ID.The nearby Paraquet Restaurant also offered students 15 percent off with ID.There were 1,278 enrolled at the College in Fall, 2011: 324 full-time, and 954 part-time. This was down from 1,313 in 2010.Useful website: www.bercol.bm.
