Clevie Wade ‘honoured’ to be named BFA Legend
Former star cricketer and footballer Clevie Wade is “over the moon” after being announced as Bermuda Football Association’s first Legend of the Year.
The versatile athlete made a name for himself in both sports at club and international levels in his heyday and now joins a distinguished group of company to have received the honour.
“I feel privileged and honoured to be selected as a legend for the BFA,” Wade told The Royal Gazette.
“It came really as a shock to me because cricket is my love. I played football but to be honoured like that I feel over the moon.”
The BFA made the announcement on social media.
“Clevie Wade is a celebrated Bermudian sportsman whose impact on both football and cricket has left a lasting legacy,” read a BFA statement.
“A dynamic and versatile athlete, he represented top clubs across the island, including Devonshire Colts, PHC, Bailey’s Bay and Vasco da Gama, earning a reputation for leadership, consistency and match-winning performances.
“Wade’s career is marked by exceptional achievements, from being named Heineken Young Cricketer of the Year in 1975, to making his Cup Match debut at just 17.
“He represented Bermuda internationally in both cricket and football, including participation in the island’s first ICC World Cup qualifier team and scoring the decisive goal in Bermuda’s 2-1 victory over Mexico in 1987.
“At the club level, he was a prolific scorer and key contributor to multiple FA Cup, Dudley Eve Cup and league victories.
“A true ambassador of Bermudian sport, Clevie Wade’s career reflects excellence, leadership and an enduring commitment to the development of future generations.”
Wade also represented Dandy Town, Hotels International, St George’s Colts and Bermuda at under-17 level in football.
He also played cricket for Western Stars and Southampton Rangers, whom he also coached to numerous titles, and also had a coaching stint with Cleveland County.
Regarded as one of the island’s top all-rounders, Wade also enjoyed success as a captain after leading St George’s Cricket Club to victory against rivals Somerset in 1983.
