Kenny Leseur achieved his best finish at the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships at the Trump National Doral course in Miami yesterday, despite shooting his worst round of the 54-hole event.

The Bermudian carded a final round eight-over- par 80, which included one birdie, a double bogey and seven bogeys, to finish seventh in the boys’ 14-15 division at 11-over-par, 227.

Leseur started the final round tied for second along with American Weston Jones at four-over-par 147, one shot behind overnight leader Nashawn Tyson.

He remained in the thick of contention for honours at the turn, despite making three bogeys on the front nine, but lost further ground battling with a nose bleed coming in.

“I had a good front nine and was only two back going into the last nine,” Leseur said. “Then, on the tenth tee, when I was getting ready to hit, blood starting gushing out of my nose.

“The medical team came out and walked next to me for the back nine and the bleeding finally stopped on the 15th hole. He wanted to take me out of the tournament, but I had to finish.

“I was looking forward to the final nine holes because I knew that I had four great birdie chances. But all the blood that came out sucked the life out of me.”

Leseur carded four more bogeys and a double bogey coming in and had to be content with his eventual finish among the field of 70 players that played the final round at the Blue Monster Course.

Tyson (221), the overnight leader, won the boys’ 14-15 title by two shots over nearest rival Jones (223) with Peru’s Eduardo Galdos (224) finishing third, a further shot back.

Maria Cabanillas (220), of Argentina, won the girls’ 13-14 division by three shots over Thailand’s Alisa Inprasit (223) with Thanchanok Iadpluem (225), also of Thailand, rounding off the podium, a further two shots back.
