Daniel Augustus hopes to build on his steady form of late after securing a top-ten finish on the Moonlight Tour in Florida on Monday.

The professional carded an impressive one under 71 to finish in a three-way tie for seventh in the 18-hole event held at the Greg Norman-designed ChampionGate National Course in Central Florida.

“Overall the round was a bit scrappy even though I shot one under,” Augustus told The Royal Gazette.

“But I am happy that I can have a scrappy round and shoot under par again, which means I am getting closer to shooting lower numbers, so I am really happy about that.

“I hit my irons well and putted well. My driver was a little squirrelly but I went straight to my home course afterwards and worked on my driver.”

Augustus has been inspired by a string of sub-par rounds lately that have done his confidence the world of good.

“I am getting comfortable again shooting under par every time I play,” he added.

“I am just trying to get back into the rhythm of going under par consistently and getting comfortable with it.”

The experienced player has made nine appearances on the Moonlight Tour this year, with his best showing to date a tie for third at the Black Bear Golf Course in January, where he shot an impressive three-under 69.

Irishman Kevin Phelan won Monday’s tournament by two shots over Dominican Republic’s Juan Guerra, with American Wyatt Spier rounding off the podium finishers a farther three strokes back.

*The second annual ICS/Cobra Puma Junior Golf Championship kicks off at Ocean View Golf Course on Thursday.

The 36-hole individual stroke play event features boys competing in the under-11, 12 to 14 and 15 to 19 age groups.

The titles in each of the divisions are wide open as Arman Newton and Adam Perry are not back to defend their boys 12 to 14 and 15 to 19 titles, while last year’s under-11 winner Charlie Smith has moved up to the next age group.

“There will be a few new champions and some new faces this year, which is great to see,” said tournament director, Ocean View assistant professional OJ Pitcher.

“The numbers are very similar to what we had last year so they have been consistent over the past two years and we will look to continue to improve.”

There will be no girls involved in the event this year due to lack of participants.

“Unfortunately we had to scrap the girls division due to not having any girls register for the event,” Pitcher said.
