Search for a 'hustle' ends in two-year suspended sentence
A homeless man was sentenced to a two-year suspended sentence on Wednesday after admitting to getting into a scuffle with Somerset Police officers.
Cannoth William Roberts, 30, of no fixed abode pleaded guilty with explanation to assaulting an officer causing bodily harm, violently resisting arrest, using threatening words in a public place and failing to leave the station when directed on Monday at 2.30 a.m.
According to a Police statement, Roberts arrived at the station requesting to speak with officers and was asked to wait outside because he smelled of an ?obnoxious odour? causing one female officer to feel nauseous.
Roberts refused to leave and became loud and aggressive with Police, before allegedly punching one officer on the left side of the face and attempting to kick him while standing on a chair.
He was restrained by officers who used Captor spray and was then arrested and charged.
Roberts told the court he was at the station doing a ?hustle? by washing cars for an officer and said: ?I didn?t go to any Police station to start a riot. I had no intention of going to start a feud.?
While explaining his defence, he described the female officer as ?a very unhappy lady? and the male officer as ?P.c. mosquito? and claimed the officer ?would stop an old lady if she was walking across the street too fast?.
Roberts claimed the officer punched him in the face and said he was not trying to fight but was just trying to ?hold his own?.
Senior Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo told Roberts to stay away from the Somerset Police Station and sentenced him to 12 months for the assault charge, six months for resisting arrest, three months for using threatening words and another three months for failing to leave the station ? but gave him a suspended sentence meaning if Roberts stays out of trouble with the law during that time he won?t serve any jail time.
