Senior bought alcohol with stolen bank card

Court reports were ordered on a Pembroke senior who admitted using a stolen credit card to buy food, alcohol and cigarettes.

Granville Gilbert, 66, pleaded guilty to stealing a credit card from Lamont Brangman and using it on four occasions to make purchases.

The court heard that on March 31, Mr Brangman noticed his wallet was missing. He contacted the bank the following day, believing he may have dropped the wallet while getting out of his car, and was informed the card had been used in several different stores.

Bank records show the card had been used at Arnolds Market to purchase cigarettes, at Churchills in St David’s to buy vodka and orange juice, at the Somers Supermart to buy food and, on April 1 at Empire Grocery to purchase a bottle of Bacardi Gold.

Mr Brangman went to Empire Grocery and a staff member indicated that Gilbert — who was still outside the store — had been the one to use the card.

The complainant approached Gilbert, who had begun to walk away, and noticed that the defendant was holding an HSBC bank card. Confronted, Gilbert ran from the scene.

Police later arrested Gilbert and, during a search found a wallet containing receipts for the four purchases and Mr Brangman’s BIU card.

Asked about the offences in court, Gilbert said: “I was intoxicated at the time.”

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo released Gilbert on $2,000 bail, ordering that pre-sentencing reports be carried out by June 21.
