Lambe in line for Mansfield debut

Set for debut: Lambe

Reggie Lambe, the Bermuda winger, has been granted international clearance and could make his debut in Mansfield Town’s home game against Carlisle United today.

The 23-year-old signed for the Sky Bet League Two side on Wednesday after a successful trial, scoring two goals in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Worksop Town, of the Northern Counties East League.

Lambe had been on trial in pre-season at Bradford City, Nahki Wells’s former club from League One, after a three-month stint at Swedish side Nyköpings, where he scored one goal in 12 games.

Carlisle, who are bottom of League Two with three points from eight games, appointed Keith Curle, the former England defender, as their manager yesterday.

The 50-year-old replaces Graham Kavanagh, who was sacked at the beginning of the month.

Curle, who becomes only the second black manager in the 92-club English football pyramid — Huddersfield Town’s Chris Powell is the other — has previously been in charge of Mansfield, Chester, Torquay United and Notts County.

Meanwhile, Rai Simons, the Bermuda striker, struck a superb hat-trick on his return from a shoulder injury in Ilkeston Under-21’s 8-0 win away to Newark Town on Thursday.

Simons could be involved in the Ilkeston first team’s home match against Ramsbottom United today in the Evo-Stik League Northern Premier.

“Rai has looked sharp since returning from international duty in the summer, but he picked a shoulder injury a couple of weeks ago that stopped him training properly,” Nigel Harrop, Ilkeston’s commercial director, said.

“[The hat-trick] has given him a boost. Maybe the enforced rest has done him good.”

Wells and Huddersfield take on local rivals Leeds United at Elland Road today in the Championship.

Huddersfield, who recently appointed Powell as manager, are in the relegation zone, having taken five points from seven games.
