Fate of National Leagues set to be resolved by vote

On hold: teams in the Vanarama National Leagues, including Dale Eve’s Spennymoor Town are set to vote on their preferred outcome for the current campaigns

The fate of the Vanarama National League campaigns, featuring several Bermudians, is set to be resolved within a month.

The National League clubs, including Justin Donawa’s Solihull Moors, Milan Butterfield’s Chesterfield and Jonté Smith’s Woking in the National League as well as Dale Eve’s Spennymoor Town and Knory Scott and Keziah Martin’s Kidderminster Harriers in the North division, have been given the chance to vote on their preferred outcome.

After a meeting this week with the Football Association and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, each club has the option of four resolutions which revolve around whether or not to carry on with the campaigns or end the season now with no relegation and promotion.

The Vanarama National League North and South divisions are in the second week of a two-week suspension after a dispute over funding.

The decision came after half of the clubs in National League North issued a joint statement calling for the immediate suspension of the season.

The row escalated after the National League's £10 million share of the British Government’s winter survival package reached its three-month expiry, with clubs given the choice of accessing individual loans, sharing a central loan or suspending the campaign altogether.

The decision to make any future funding in the form of loans rather than grants angered many clubs across the National League’s three divisions, leaving the continuation of the North and South seasons in grave doubt.

Only a handful of clubs had been able to let supporters into their grounds at any point during the season and, after the surge in coronavirus cases, all games have been without crowds.

Gate receipts make up the vast majority of revenue for National League clubs and so many are reluctant to take on the financial burden without the support of grants.

Before the National League’s decision of a two-week suspension, 12 National League North sides, including Spennymoor, signed statement calling for an immediate suspension of action in order to have time to find a “solution that is acceptable to all”.

The National League has not completely given up hope that the Government might reverse its decision and offer grants instead of loans.

It has launched a petition pushing its case, and a spokesman for the campaign said: "National League clubs are facing catastrophe and a perilous situation in the next few days. We need a sustainable lifeline that does not leave clubs facing future ruin.

"After changing the terms of its support in the middle of the season, the Government must reverse its decision to offer loans and now fulfil its promise of a new grant.

"Our clubs play an immeasurable role in communities all over the UK and provide immense structures of support for many.

"Current government loan offers have moved the financial goalposts mid-season and jeopardised the future of our clubs.

"Without adequate and fair funding, the National League will not survive, with consequences felt by thousands of players, supporters and club staff across the UK for many years to come.”

Under the National League’s Articles of Association, member clubs have 28 days to return voting submissions.
