Theron leads the way in Boston

Maritz Theron completed the Boston Marathon in under three hours to lead home a sizeable group of Island residents.

Theron reached the halfway point in 1hr 24min 15 sec, but slowed in the more hilly second half of yesterday’s race before crossing the line in 2:59:46.

Next fastest for the Island was Jamie Fraser, who kept a consistent pace throughout the 26.2-mile event to finish in 3:03:42.

He was followed across the line by Kristen Palmer, who was the first woman from the Island to finish in 3:26:38, ahead of Mid Atlantic Athletic Club president Christopher Jones, who ran 3:33:14.

Former Island resident Ronnie Wong, who raised almost $4,000 for the Bermuda St John Ambulance when he competed in January’s Bermuda Marathon Weekend, completed the 300th marathon of his running career when he crossed the line in 4:07:22.

The race was won by Ethiopia’s Lelisa Desisa in 2:09:17, and the first woman finisher was Kenya’s Caroline Rotich in 2:24:55.

Other Island residents to complete the Boston Marathon included: Justin Brenden in 3:33:16; Andrew Hunt in 3:37:45; Gemma Holden in 3:44:31; Benjamin Lau in 3:53:45; Jose Lopez in 3:55:36; Martin Merritt 4:04:13; Anne Kermode in 4:10:36; Darren White in 4:22:32; Liz Craig in 4:35:54; Jayne Stevens 4:38:28.
