Smith qualifies for the Olympics

Rio-bound: Bermuda long jumper Smith

Tyrone Smith, the Bermuda long jumper, has qualified for the Rio Olympics after winning his event at the World Challenge Mohammed VI d’Athletisme de Rabat in Morocco with a leap of 8.20 metres.

The two-times Olympian recorded back-to-back fouls on his first two attempts, before leaping 7.96 on his third attempt.

A foul on the fourth leap was followed by leaps of 8.08 and 8.20, which have qualified the 30-year-old for both the World Championships in Beijing in August and next year’s Olympics.

Smith wrote in a tweet: “Got the win today here in Morocco! 8.20m, 2cm off my personal best and qualified for World Champs and my third Olympic Games.”

Smith, who will compete at next month’s Pan Am Games in Toronto, finished twelfth at the London Olympics.

It has been one of the strongest starts to a season for Smith, who leapt 8.09 at last month’s Rice University track and field meet in Houston— farther than he managed to jump all last season — having opened up with a 7.97 at the Mount SAC Relays in California in April.

Tre Houston, the Bermuda sprinter, completed a “hat-trick” of qualifying for the Olympic Games, World Championships and Pan Am Games last week.

ouston posted a personal best of 20.42sec in the 200 metres at the Texas State University Friday Night All-Comers Meet to qualify for all three competitions.
