Bike rider airlifted to Boston after horror crash

A police officer takes notes at an accident scene at the entrance of the causeway near Blue Hole Park

An elderly couple screamed in horror as they saw two men on a bike heading straight towards their car as they returned home from a Father’s Day dinner.William and Elizabeth Viera said there was nothing they could have done to avoid the bike on Blue Hole Hill Road in Hamilton Parish. The head-on crash resulted in the bike rider and his pillion passenger, who are both aged 33, ending up underneath the couple’s Hyundai Getz. The impact of the crash is understood to have lifted the car from the road causing both men to slide underneath. It took the combined strength of about ten police officers and passers-by to lift the car from on top of the two men. They both remained conscious throughout the 20 minutes they were under the car. Those on the scene said the bike rider was trapped completely under the car, while the lower half of the pillion passenger’s body was also under the car. Both men were taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital suffering from multiple broken bones and fractures. At about 2pm yesterday the bike rider was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for further medical treatment. The pillion passenger was said to remain in a stable condition in KEMH’s Intensive Care Unit.Mr and Mrs Viera, who are aged 70 and 68, were returning home after a family meal at the Black Horse Tavern in St David’s when the accident happened at about 7.45pm on Sunday. The couple’s son Steven Viera, who was just two cars behind, frantically ran to check on his parents and helped to lift the car to free the two men.The bike is understood to have been trying to overtake another vehicle travelling eastbound on the road’s bend next to Blue Hole Hill Park, at the start of The Causeway.Mrs Viera, of Pembroke, said: “It was awful, truly awful. The bike just came from nowhere, it was right there coming towards us.“We couldn’t have avoided it. I think my husband braked and maybe swerved but the bike was right there, it happened in seconds.“I just let out one big scream, I think we both screamed in horror. There was such an impact, I thought I was going to go through the windscreen.”Mrs Viera struggled to hold back her tears at the scene as she said: “I’m just praying that the men are going to be okay. I just hope they make a full recovery, that’s all I can think about. Cars can be replaced but lives can’t.”Mrs Viera said they had thought about going for a drive to Clearwater Beach after their meal, but decided to head straight home as her husband does not like driving at night. She said her husband did not drive over 25km per hour and this had been his first ever accident. The couple was badly shaken by the accident, but did not require hospital treatment. Other motorists comforted them and moved them away from the scene as the two men were being freed from underneath their car.Mrs Viera said: “We were really shook up. We were literally trembling.“This is something we’ve never experienced in our lifetime, but everyone was so nice to us. I want to thank them for helping.”Their son saw the accident as he was driving in his car with his wife and two children, aged four and two.He said: “We were all coming back from a Father’s Day meal. We’d had a nice meal, everything was good then this happened.“I saw the accident as I was right behind. My parents were going really slowly and the bike just came out of nowhere.“The bike was heading straight for their car; they didn’t stand a chance.“The impact of the crash lifted up the car.”The two men on the bike appeared to be travelling within a group of bikes. The group of about eight men stopped at the scene and told motorists they were returning to St George’s having visited the grave of a friend. The friends frantically yelled out “get them out of there” and “you have to help them” as they saw their two friends under the car.Tempers flared as the car initially proved too heavy to lift with the young men becoming abusive to police officers and passers-by. Witnesses said: “It all nearly kicked off.”Steven Viera said: “It was chaos as everyone was just shouting. It was pretty scary.“They were understandably upset about their friends, but there was lots of anger and raised voices.”About 15 police officers, three ambulances and a fire engine attended the crash, which caused traffic throughout the area to come to a standstill. There were more cars than normal on the road as many people were returning home from the St David’s Pow Wow Festival.By about 8.30pm eastbound traffic had already tailed back to Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club with many motorists getting out their cars and walking to the scene to see what was happening. The road was closed as police cordoned off the scene, then about 30 minutes later officers began to let through one lane of traffic.Traffic investigators examined the scene, which included the extensively-damaged bike with its front wheel missing and minor damage to the front of the car. Next to the bike were two white sneakers and a black bike helmet.Traffic disruption continued until the two vehicles were removed from the scene and taken to the police compound at about 10pm.Bermuda Police Service would like to hear from anyone who saw or knows anything about the accident. Witnesses should call Pc Anthony Thurab on 295-0011.
