Goal shooter Danielle Raynor made a significant contribution in guiding Phoenix Blaze to a 25-10 victory over Lady Stars in a Netball Bermuda Summer League match on Tuesday night.

Raynor, one of five senior players who featured for the Phoenix development side, led the way with 12 goals, MVP Callia Joell found the target seven times, A’Meerah Richardson-Swan chipped in with four points and Hailey Trott scored twice.

Chelzea Somner, Dominique Richardson, Nyisha Saunders and Kianté Lightbourne were the other veterans who featured in the encounter.

Raynor’s return for the Summer League has seen her step back into the national training squad as she is fighting for a spot in the final team for the Central American and Caribbean Games in Dominican Republic next month.

“Our focus is on development at Phoenix and we recognise competing alongside our upcoming players helps with their on-court development,” Raynor said.

“Instead of our more experienced players taking the court for the whole game, you will see a good mix of players so that everyone is gaining exposure to a higher level of play.

“Nyisha Saunders is an experienced defender alongside Kianté Lightbourne, another influential and experienced defender for Phoenix Heat.

“Dominique a key midcourt attacker and myself, an experienced shooter, helps shape the upcoming players growth and decision making during game situations in all areas of the court — from defence to the shooting circle.

“Overall, we all enjoy playing together, summer league is the perfect time to gain more on-court practice and just have fun with less focus on winning. Seeing the players evolve is the biggest reward for us.”

For Stars, who had K’Xiyae Gibbons adjudged MVP, their points came from Marissa Brangman with eight, while Kim Thompson and Nahjae Rayner had one goal each.

In an earlier women’s fixture, Devonshire Rec defeated Tropical Storm 23-16. MVP Demiqua Daniels, who scored seven goals was the MVP for Devosnhire Rec, with the other points for victorious side coming from Kessiah Jackson and Micah Pond.

Journee Belboda, the Storm MVP, was the highest scorer with eleven goals, while Nala Richardson had three and Maya Williams-Johnson contributed two points.

In a Co-ed encounter, Bailey's Bay Breezers edged Atlantic Aces 19-18. Alexia Pascall, the Breezers MVP, scored 16 goals and three points came from Kayla Burgess.

Destini Hill-Edwards was voted best attacker for the winning side with footballer Jahzardae Samuels deemed the most outstanding defender.
