Busy months on the horizon

Bermuda’s junior golfers will be extremely busy over the next several weeks.

Bermuda Junior Golf Association will be staging the inaugural HSBC Summer of Golf, which is a series of programmes designed to recruit and aid the development of advanced players.

The series is comprised of the National Championships, Summer Golf Camp, Family Fun Day, Summer Tour and HSBC Week of Golf.

The National Championships will be held at Belmont Hills between June 30 and July 4. The match play tournament consists of two divisions — Championship and Open — and is designed for established players.

The Summer Golf Camp will be held from July 7 to 11 at the Bermuda Golf Academy.

The aim of the camp, which is reserved for potential golfers who are not part of the regular BJGA programme or who have been members since January 2014, is to teach newcomers the fundamentals.

The Family Fun Day will be held on July 12 at the Bermuda Golf Academy.

The Summer Tour takes place July 15 to August 21 at Riddell’s Bay and Tucker’s Point and is designed to reinforce basic skills

The Summer of Golf then concludes with the HSBC Week of Golf which is comprised of the International Classic and Junior National Par 3 Championships. The International Classic will be held August 26 to 28 at Tucker’s Point, Mid Ocean Club and Port Royal Golf Course, while the Junior National Par 3 Championships takes place at Turtle Hill Golf Course August 29 to 30.

The Summer of Golf kicked off yesterday with the medal round of the National Championships at Belmont Hills where Sam Wehmeyer and Kenny Leseur captured honors in the Championship and Open Divisions.

Wehmeyer, who carded a five-over-par 75, has finished runner-up in the main event for the past two years while Lesuer is the defending Open Division champion.

Defending champion Walker Campbell is the top seed in the Championship Division while ten-year-old Leseur has been seeded No 1 in the Open Division.
