Wells off after clutching calf in victory

Wells, right, was taken off late in Huddersfield’s victory

Nahki Wells was substituted after clutching his calf with four minutes remaining of Huddersfield Town’s 1-0 victory over fellow promotion chasers Reading at the John Smith’s Stadium yesterday.

Phil Billing’s winner with eight minutes remaining was enough to give David Wagner’s side the three points in their Sky Bet Championship clash. The victory maintains Huddersfield’s third place in the table, as they moved four points behind second-placed Brighton & Hove Albion. They also increased their lead over Reading to four points and have a game in hand over yesterday’s fourth-placed opponents.

Billing grabbed the only goal of the game when he beat Ali Al Habsi with a close-range volley after the Reading goalkeeper had saved a first-half penalty from Rajiv van La Parra.

Huddersfield have won 11 of their past 13 matches and created the best chance when Liam Moore fouled Izzy Brown, but Van La Parra’s spot kick was well saved.

Bermuda striker Wells and Elias Kachunga also wasted good chances to put the Terriers in front before Billing did.

“We have only had one penalty this season and we are not used to it,” Huddersfield manager Wagner joked.

“What concerned me was after we missed the penalty our body language was not good and for 10 minutes Reading were on top and Danny Ward kept us in it.

“We spoke about it at half-time and I told the players they could still go out and win it in the second half. Both teams had good chances but we had more and that’s why we deserved the three points.”

Rai Simons was a second-half substitute for Chesterfield in their 0-0 draw away to FA Cup quarter-finalists Millwall in League One. Simons came on for Sylvan Ebanks-Blake in the 76th minute at The Den.
