Hopkins, Hedges team up in BBA drive
National cycling coach Greg Hopkins and former pro rider Kris Hedges will be teaming up this Sunday morning, prepared to take on allcomers in the first of a series of events organised by Bermuda Bicycle Association.
But the top duo won?t be looking to work over those who attend, but work with them.
Returning to his former position after a two-year absence, Hopkins explained that attracting riders at the grass roots level was a priority for the Association this year.
?It is vitally important that we work not only with established riders on the Island, but the many recreational cyclists that we see on the roads every day, who with some guidance may just gain the confidence to try the sport on a competitive level,? said the coach.
?We are not looking to recruit riders for competition necessarily, but we do want to offer them the opportunity to learn more about their cycling skills.
?We will cover bike handling, riding techniques, training methods and even information about their bikes. If they subsequently decide to try to race then that?s great, but if they don?t then at least they will be more efficient and confident riders on the roads.?
Joining Hopkins in running the clinic, Hedges, who took a step back from top level racing last year after a year in Europe will put his vast experience to good use, having started cycling as a youngster in Bermuda and working his way through the sport to the top amateur level, on the way winning every major local event as well as some impressive international events.
?Kris is one of those guys who recognises that he gained a lot from the sport and thankfully is prepared to give back,? added Hopkins.
?He is chairman of the Athletes Commission in the Bermuda Olympic Association and is passionate about the continued development of the sport.?
Sunday?s first clinic is designed for the novice and junior riders and and is open to members and non-members of the BBA.
?It will be basic level instruction so hopefully people will not feel intimidated about attending,? said Hopkins.
The clinic starts at 9 a.m. outside Fort Know at Southside, St.David?s. Those wishing to attend should e-mail bba-squadhotmail.com.
