Smokey the dachshund’s handler wins Westminster Dog Show with another dog
Bermuda representative Smokey the dachshund didn’t win a place in New York’s Westminster dog show but his owner is hoping he will soon start a new pedigree bloodline here. The Island’s first American Kennel Club-registered grand champion ultimately lost out to Hickory, a Scottish deerhound.“Smokey’s handler, Angie Lloyd, won with her dog, who was Smokey’s neighbour in their room at the Pennsylvania Hotel,” said Smokey’s owner, Paul Clinton. The 135th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show was held on Tuesday at Madison Square Gardens.“I sat with my dachshund Brutus Echo and watched the coverage on USA Network, and was immensely proud of our little ambassador. He was perhaps the youngest of the standard smooth dachshunds to feature.”Mr Clinton said Smokey “showed beautifully and from accounts by the breeders, was happy and well-mannered. He did not, however, place.”The Bermudian artist, who said he became “besotted” with dachshunds back in 1996, plans to breed them in Bermuda once Smokey returns.“I’ve bought another standard smooth dachshund called Eleanor Rose Quartz, from breeders on Long Island, and I’m figuring they will breed very well. Litters are usually five or six strong, which leaves three or four puppies to sell in Bermuda and the rest to send to New York for competitions.”Smokey has been on the dog show circuit since April of last year. Other appearances include the Dachshund Club of America show, and the Eukanuba dog show last September in California. The dog should be brought to Bermuda in March.Useful web links: www.abcnews.go.com; www.legibachdachshunds.com.
