Onions outplayed after red card controversy

Key West remain in the driving seat in the Commercial ?A? Division after winning 3-1 over title rivals MR Onions who were forced to to play for 70 minutes with ten men.

Onions could have scored twice in the first ten minutes in Saturday?s encounter but a Nick Briggs header and a Darragh O?Donoghue shot went over the bar. Then Key West took the lead after 20 minutes in controversial circumstances ? a hopeful ball into the area was misjudged by Onions keeper Greg Fraser and Onions player/manager Steve Smith attempted to save it with his hand, although Key West striker Janeiro Tucker made sure by putting in the rebound.

Referee Antoine Augustus ignored Onions? protests that the ball was already over the line, sent Smith off and awarded the goal. However the BFA referees? committee have since agreed Smith was harshly judged and have rescinded the red card and swapped it for a yellow.

Despite being a man down, Onions continued to control the first half and were soon level when Garret Mulvin headed in an O?Donoghue cross. They should have taken the lead shortly after when O?Donoghue again blazed over the bar from close range.

At half-time Key West brought on Karl Roberts and Kenny Thompson and proceeded to take control of the game. They went ahead after 70 minutes when a hopeful cross from sub Wayne Augustus 45 yards out on the left wing dropped into the top corner.

The leaders then sealed victory with five minutes to go with a powerful shot from Roderick Lewis that hit the post and flew in.

Lobster Pot moved up to third after clinging on for a 1-0 win against BAA.

Pot went head in the ninth minute when Steve Palmer headed in a Jameel Effendy corner. Dave Allison should have made it two on a breakaway but the advancing keeper pulled off a fine save with his legs.

Allison was later carried off with a pulled hamstring as BAA piled on the pressure but Pot kept them at bay.

Robin Hood beat a struggling Tuff Dogs side 4-1. Dave Wolffe put Hood ahead in the 18th minute but Kevin Mooney evened it up on the half hour. Second half strikes by Brian Fubler, Alan Mooney and Kenny Dill sealed it for Hood.

Four strikes from Sheridan (Baldy) Ming helped PHC to a 4-2 victory over Dandy Town Roots A.

Roots went one-up through club president Calvin Blakendal after a fine cross. The setback spurred PHC to up the tempo. Ming converted a penalty after a defender handled to make it 1-1 at half-time. Raiders came out with the same intensity and Ming grabbed his second after some neat build-up play before Roots equalised when striker Mark Trott squeezed a header past the keeper at the near post.

Ming was then bought down in the box and converted his second spot kick. Raiders keeper Cal Waldron?s long punt upfield eventually found its way to Ming who beat the offside trap for a simple tap-in before he was subbed.

An improving St. George?s All-Stars, who are still in the FA Cup, picked up their first win of the season and finally got off the bottom of the table after a 2-0 victory over Valley with goals from Caisey Burgess and Freddie Hall.

In the B Division, there?s no stopping Island XI who defeated Devonshire Lions 2-0 via goals from Xavier James and Matthew Watson.

Hamilton Parish are still on course for promotion after beating Prospect/Fire 6-2. Alvin Baker grabbed two while Irving Burgess, Sean Dill, Devray Hollis and Johnny Bean grabbed one each. Wendell Woodgate Simmons and Rupert Knight were on target for Prospect/Fire.

Vasco remain third after beating Boulevard by the same score. Vasco eventually enjoyed a fairly easy win after a tight first half on a slick and muddy field on which both teams struggled. A Ricardo Arruda hat-trick, plus two from Mark DeMoura and one from Nuno Furtado ensured three points for the Portuguese club.

Somerset Bridge and Pest Control earned their first draws of the season in a 4-4 thriller at White Hill Field.

Pest Control came out in their customary laid back manner and were soon 3-0 down to nine-man Bridge in the first 30 minutes. Noel Edness began the Pest Control revival with a screamer into the top corner from the edge of the box. Edness scored his second of the game early in the second half following up on a free kick from outside the box and Michael O?Brien made it three apiece with 20 minutes remaining as Pest Control started to knock the ball around their tiring opponents.

Jamie Matthew hit the fourth, a fine individual effort after a good run down the wing. However, Bridge?s efforts were rewarded with a well-deserved point when they converted a penalty in the dying minutes.

It was the turn of Somerset Extros to have their time wasted by Warwick United who failed to have enough players for their home game at a White Hill on Saturday.

Extros took out their frustration on Wolves on Monday night in an 11-0 thrashing. Rodney Bascome netted four, Troy (Starsky) Govia, Mike Bremar, Gladtone (Old Hell) Robinson all got two while Kent Bascome completed the rout.

Second-placed MR Onions had little trouble against a faltering Dockyard Falcons and ran out 8-1 winners on Saturday. After an even opening, Alan Moore scored with a deflected shot while Steve Nowell chipped the keeper. Falcons grabbed one back and spurned chances to equalise before Nick Wills headed in a loose ball to put Onions 3-1 up by the break.

Falcons poured forward leaving gaps at the back. Goals from Nowell, Moore, Joe Roberts and Phil Heaney gave Onions their rather flattering scoreline.

At Shelly Bay Wolves drew 2-2 with Dandy Town. Wolves? Horace Landy banged in a penalty after a handball. Town equalised when Kirk Douglas was quickest to react to a shot which rebounded off the crossbar and then went ahead in the second half when Dennis Webb completed a crisp counter attack. A Keith DeShields? scorcher resulted in a 2-2 final score.
