Alexander Isak fans may have to bide their time
Since the last Premier League game, a busier-than-usual transfer deadline day means fantasy managers have a host of new players to research and attempt to predict the impact made by those switching clubs.
The main move on September 1 ended the biggest transfer saga of the summer, with Alexander Isak finally getting his wish and moving to Liverpool. But, given he has been training on his own for a number of weeks and was on international duty with Sweden, it would be no surprise to see Arne Slot start him on the bench against Burnley on Sunday.
Two of the more intriguing deals revolved around goalkeepers, with Gianluigi Donnarumma joining Manchester City and Senne Lammens moving to Manchester United.
Donnarumma, in particular, is one of the best shot-stoppers in the world, but it remains to be seen how he fits into Pep Guardiola’s pattern of play, given he is not the best with the ball at his feet.
St David’s footballer Keishon Bean and his “Lamb Chops FC” took the first monthly bragging rights this season, finishing top of the table for August with 213 points.
Saturday
Arsenal v Nottingham Forest (8.30pm)
Former Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglu returns to North London with his new club. Forest could not have appointed a coach with a more different style to predecessor Nuno Espirito Santo, with Postecoglu preferring a possession-based approach, so it will be interesting to see how the players react.
Bukayo Saka and William Saliba are missing for Arsenal, but Noni Madueke showed his class for England in midweek and is set to play a starring role on the wing. With Martin Odegaard and Eberechi Eze also likely to start, striker Viktor Gyökeres is likely to get plenty of service and could be worth considering as a captain — and for using one of your boosts.
Prediction: 3-0
Bournemouth v Brighton & Hove Albion (11am)
The home side continue to impress, with Andoni Iraola one of the more underrated coaches in the league. Evanilson scored his first Premier League goal of the season before the international break and is likely to get chances here.
Brighton beat Manchester City before the break, but that is nothing new. However, they have not been quite as impressive as last season in the opening weeks. They have only one player, midfielder Brajan Gruda, to have reached double figures in points accumulated in the competition
Prediction: 2-1
Crystal Palace v Sunderland (11am)
You win some, you lose some for Palace fans, with Eberechi Eze moving on to Arsenal but captain Marc Guehi staying until at least January. Keep a close eye on their newest signing, Yeremy Pino. Despite playing only 19 minutes as a substitute on his debut against Aston Villa, he completed two successful dribbles, the most of any Palace player in the match. Ismaïla Sarr is out through injury.
It might be famine and feast for Sunderland this season, having won both home games but losing away to Burnley.
Prediction: 1-0
Everton v Aston Villa (11am)
David Moyes has Everton in fifth at this early stage of the season, with loan signing Jack Grealish providing plenty of assists. Grealish is up to 22 points in this competition, the third-highest for midfielders, and will be looking to shine against his former club.
Villa have picked up just one point from their opening three games and are the only team in the Premier League yet to score. They were busy on deadline day, signing Jadon Sancho and Harvey Elliott on loan, with defender Viktor Lindelöf also arriving. They will need those players to make an instant impact. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez wanted a move in the window, but is still at the club.
Prediction 1-1
Fulham v Leeds United (11am)
Fulham will be hoping to pick up their first win of the season against newly promoted Leeds. They have unearthed a great talent in Josh King, who has come through their academy and is keeping Emile Smith Rowe out of the team. Alex Iwobi is again the team’s highest fantasy scorer.
Leeds have four points from their opening three games and will be hoping they find things easier at Craven Cottage than they did in their first away game, a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Arsenal. Leeds defenders are racking up the points, but Gabriel Gudmundsson, who has 17, is rated 50-50 with a muscle problem.
Prediction: 2-1
Newcastle United v Wolverhampton Wanderers (11am)
No Isak for the Geordies, but we can expect new signing Nick Woltemade to start. The Germany forward is basically a Peter Crouch regen, good with his feet despite being 6ft 6in. Yoane Wissa will also make his debut.
Wolves signed Tolu Arokodare, Belgium’s Golden Boot winner last season, on deadline day but it is their defence that has been struggling with eight goals conceded in their opening three games. No player has made it into double figures in this competition yet.
Prediction: 2-0
West Ham United v Tottenham Hotspur (1.30pm)
West Ham eased the pressure on Graham Potter with a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest before the international break. Lucas Paquetá has started to hit form but it is Crysencio Summerville who could be worth transferring into your team. The winger, who has the pace of an Olympic sprinter, is returning from injury but made a huge impact off the bench last time. Potter will be tempted to start him here.
It has been two steps forward and one back for Tottenham after wins over Burnley and Manchester City were followed by defeat against Bournemouth. Forwards Xavi Simons and Randal Kolo Muani were the last signings of Daniel Levy, who stepped down as chief executive this week.
Prediction: 1-2
Brentford v Chelsea (4pm)
Another London derby rounds out the Saturday fixtures. Brentford signed Reiss Nelson on loan from Arsenal on transfer deadline day and they will be hoping he can help fill the void left by the departures of Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa. He is a talented player and should pick up some points.
Chelsea have some injuries among their forwards, with Cole Palmer a doubt and Liam Delap ruled out with a thigh injury. However, they have the second-highest scoring defender in the competition in Trevoh Chalobah, and the best midfielder and attacker in Enzo Fernández and João Pedro respectively.
Prediction: 0-2
Sunday
Burnley v Liverpool (10am)
Burnley have been welcomed to the Premier League by facing Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool in the course of their first four matches, but it is difficult to see them picking up any points against the undefeated champions.
Arne Slot now has the task of integrating Alexander Isak into the team, but it would be no surprise if that happens slowly because of his lack of playing time and bigger games on the horizon, including the return of the Champions League. Right back Jeremie Frimpong is closing in on a return.
Prediction 1-3
Manchester City v Manchester United (12.30pm)
New signings may well be to the fore here, and two new goalkeepers could get their first taste of the Manchester derby.
Pep Guardiola will surely drop James Trafford for Gianluigi Donnarumma, but has huge problems with injuries. Omar Marmoush has joined new signing Rayan Cherki, Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic on the sidelines after picking up a knee injury on international duty with Egypt in midweek. John Stones is also doubtful.
United fans will not have to go into this game worrying about the presence of Andre Onana in goal, but Matheus Cunha, who limped off injured in the match against Burnley before the international break, is also ruled out. Mason Mount is a doubt.
Prediction: 1-0
