Stars on the move as Gibbons hits ton

Bailey's Bay 199 Western Stars moved into position to take over sole possession of first place in the Premier League after this 151-run win over Bailey's Bay left them as the only unbeaten team.

Stars are now level with St. David's on 25 points, after the Islanders suffered their first loss, and will will go five points clear if they win their game in hand.

Treadwell Gibbons led the Stars batting with a fluent 122 while two other 40-year-olds, Ricky Brangman and Arnold Manders, scored 51 and 30 respectively. Gary Brangman propped up the tail with 46 not out.

Dennis Pilgrim was the only Bay bowler yo take more than one wicket, finishing with two for a costly 65 runs.

The total proved too steep for Bay who came unstuck against the spin of Manders, Justin Robinson and Cleon Scotland. Robinson was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three for 22 off 6.5 overs while Manders and Scotland both took two each.

Irving Romaine was high man for Bay with 52 while Charlie Marshall hit 43, Ricky Hill 35 and Noel Gibbons 28.

St. George's 283-3 St. David's 146 Previously unbeaten St. David's were brought down to earth at Wellington Oval as St. George's won this derby by a resounding 137 runs.

For all intents and purposes the match was over after St. George's ended their innings with a blaze of boundaries, scoring 112 in the last 10 overs to set the league leaders a steep target of 284.

The top bats in the St. George's line-up all produced as opener Dexter Smith led the way with 69, including 10 boundaries, off 93 balls. He and Eugene Foggo (19) put on 83 for the first wicket.

Then number three Sinclair Gibbons struck a fluent 53 and Mark Ray finished with 64 not out as the St. David's bowlers were hammered into submission.

Dean Minors' knock of 52 helped put the match out of the reach of St. David's.

Coming in in the 44th over, he faced only 21 balls and hit six fours and three sixes in an unbroken stand of 80 with Ray.

To make matters worse for St. David's, they had three overs deducted for a slow bowling rate, leaving them to score at a rate of 6.04 an over.

St. David's were soon in trouble at 31-4 with Gregg Foggo claiming three of the first four wickets, bowling Chris Foggo and Landro Minors and then bowling OJ Pitcher first ball.

Glenn Blakeney led the batting with 37 while Sammy Robinson scored 36.

Eugene Foggo finished with three for 18 off nine overs.

Social Club 161 Flatts 162-0 On a day when Social Club reached their biggest total of the season, they still suffered a humiliating defeat as Flatts romped to victory by 10 wickets at Devonshire Rec.

With opener Kevin Lapsley scoring 39 and Dean Smith 30, the Social Club total of 161 was by far their best this year. Veteran Gary Williams contributed 17, joining Lapsley in a third wicket stand that added 65.

Gershon Gibbons led the Flatts bowlers with three for 23 while Derek Wright had three for 35 and Alan Richardson two for 25.

Richardson and Vernon Eve needed just 17.2 overs to steer Flatts to victory, Richardson blasting 76 not out and Eve an unbeaten 30.

Social Club's bowlers conceded 51 wides and four no balls.

Southampton 227-8 PHC 94 Janeiro Tucker hammered 96 (five fours and eight sixes) and Keith Wainwright 36 to lead champions Southampton to a 133-run victory at Sea Breeze Oval in a game reduced to 39 overs.

Other high scorers were Kwame Tucker with 29 and Ian Armstrong with 18. Sharon Hunt returned three for 45 and Charles Symonds two for 34.

PHC were dismissed in just 23.5 overs with Sheridan Ming scoring 32 and Kevin Dill 15, the only pair in double figures.

David Saltus claimed five for 17 off seven overs while Sidney Simmons had four for 20 off 6.5 overs.

Warwick 148 Somerset CC 149-3 Cordell Gilbert struck 58 and Tony Cheeseman 41 to lead Somerset to a seven wicket victory over Warwick at Southampton Oval.

Veteran fast bowler Hoyt Zuill led the Warwick attack with two wickets for 27 off eight overs.

Earlier Reginald Pitcher topped the Warwick batting with 26 while Johnny Ball scored 23, Perry Scott 18 and Kyan Butterfield 15. Kenny Maybury took four for 27 off 10 overswhile Craig Brangman had three for 19 off four overs.

Cleveland 202 Willow Cuts 185 Skipper Aaron Adams thumped 68 and Anthony Bascome hit 50 to lead Cleveland to a 17-run victory over Willow Cuts in a match reduced to 45 overs at Somerset.

The pair added 124 for the fourth wicket. Also among the runs were openers Carlton Smith with 21 and Curtis Jackson with 20.

Kevin Fubler took three for 32 while Reggie Tucker had two for five and Ozzie Hinds two for 37.

Dwight Basden led Cuts batting with 35 while Tucker scored 31, skipper Dexter Basden 25 and Rodney Fubler 20.

Johnny Richardson took three for 45, Peter Philpott two for 26, Carlton Smith two for 29 and H.Rawat two for 39.

Note: The game between Somerset Bridge and Police, scheduled for White Hill, was not played after the umpires failed to show up.
